Call to Choirs: Sing For Water

MEDIA RELEASE

Call to Choirs: Sing For Water at Salisbury International Arts Festival, 30 May 2009

Salisbury International Arts Festival is calling choirs across the region to seize the opportunity to perform at this year’s Festival in a special project called Sing For Water

In an exciting start to a special four year project centering on choirs, the Festival will present Sing For Water in Salisbury's beautiful Cathedral Close in a performance during the Festival (date 22 May – 6 June). We are inviting choirs from Wiltshire, Avon, Dorset, Hampshire,Isle of Wight and Somerset to join us on the journey.

Reading and non-reading choirs are welcome to participate in the project. The format of the performance is that each choir will prepare a short programme (length to be advised) and come together to sing one song at the end of the performance. This powerful joining together of many voices will culminate in a performance of the folk tune Waly Waly directed by acclaimed conductor Howard Moody.  There will be an afternoon rehearsal; music and recordings for learning Waly Waly will be provided in advance.

There is no charge for a choir's involvement but it is anticipated that each individual singer will raise a minimum of £50 sponsorship for Water Aid.

The project reflects Festival Director Maria Bota's themes ofIndiaand Water.

Sing for Water was initiated by composer Helen Chadwick as a project bringing together singers and choirs to raise money for WaterAid at the Mayor’s Thames Festival. WaterAid is an international charity whose mission is to overcome poverty by enabling the world’s poorest people to gain access to safe water. So far Sing for Water has raised over £300,000 for WaterAid projects working towards a vision of a world where everyone has access to safe water, sanitation & hygiene education.

So take advantage of this opportunity to perform at Salisbury International Arts Festival!  To take part fill in the application form online (www.salisburyfestival.co.uk) - one application form per choir is all that is needed.
