Hotel Medea - call for participants

Hotel Medea: be part of a unique piece of theatre!
A performance from Brazil's Zecora Ura and London-based The Urban Dolls
“…the brassy, rough and ready inventiveness of this talented company never wanes…” Time Out
In a truly exciting international art event, Hotel Medea previews at Salisbury International Arts Festival in May 2008. This reworking of the ancient Medea myth is a joint-commission by Gargarullo Theatre in Rio de Janeiro and Salisbury International Arts Festival. This exciting and highly-anticipated event brings together the writer Marc Von Henning (one of contemporary European theatre's most important figures) and alongside the renowned Brazilian DJ Dolores (aka Helder Aragão); both figures are well known for taking classical myths and neglected traditions and bringing them to a wider audience.
As part of this project we are delivering a programme of residencies in Salisbury to produce the first and second chapters of the trilogy - a large scale Zero Hour Market performance and intimate overnight performances as part of DRYLANDS. The Salisbury Residency will be a series of inter-cultural, cross-disciplinary and cross-generational workshops involving local performers (students, artists, actors, dancers, video artists) and designers to integrate these new company members alongside the existing Hotel Medea artists.
The Salisbury Hotel Medea Residency:
For 5 – 7 hours each day over a period of two weeks, up to 15 participants are introduced to our performance techniques. Performance workshops include:
· Persis Jade Maravala removing inhibitions and increasing mental and physical discipline
· Jorge Lopes Ramos using Butoh principles and Capoeira Angola to explore the performance potential of movement, rhythm and even acrobatics
· Urias de Oliveira (award winning Brazilian actor/director) introducing the characters and dances of the ancient Bull Myth and its connections with and other afro-Brazilian rituals
· Exercises to improve risk-taking in performance
· Increased responsibility in company performance
Participants must commit to attendance and punctuality for each workshop.
Participation in the residency does not necessarily guarantee participation in the performance.
If people are passionate and committed it is most likely that they will find a role in the piece:
