Elgar's publisher Jaeger suggested to the composer in October 1904 that he write 'a brilliant string scherzo... a real bring the house down torrent of a thing such as Bach would write'. The composer's creative response was a rapturous treat, the Introduction & Allegro.

For all Benjamin Britten's copious talent, it's his ability to write music that so naturally and pleasingly fits the contours of the human voice that has largely certified his genius; the symphonic song-cycle Spring Symphony here follows Poulenc's reflection of a touching, calming and simple faith.
