 | The Endellion String quartet presents an all-Beethoven programme music for which they have garnered international acclaim. |
In Op 14 No. 1 the freshness and loveliness of this jewel of a piece is, if anything, enhanced in Beethoven's new setting for string quartet.
The third Razumovsky quartet, Op 59 No. 3, shows Beethoven breaking new boundaries of scale and scope. The fugal Finale is a tour de force of energy and invention.
In the Op 131 we feel the full force of Beethoven's imaginative powers. Free of all conventions, practical restraints, and compromises these late works of profound genius baffled Beethoven's contemporaries. Their context was his ill health, loneliness and financial worries. When questioned he calmly explained they "were written for a later age."
Programme:
Ludwig van Beethoven String Quartet (arrangement of Piano Sonata Op 14 No 1)
Ludwig van Beethoven String Quartet Op 59 No 3
Ludwig van Beethoven String Quartet Op 131
'These superb musicians respond to the dark undertow so characteristic of Beethoven's quartets as much as the gentle lyricism, which invariablyn breaks through.'
