 | The spell of Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 never ceases to weave its magic over Salisbury audiences. But this is a performance with a difference; the individual works that make up the whole were written to accompany an evening service 400 years ago in St Mark’s Venice. |
Uniquely for Salisbury Cathedral and with their special permission, Vespers 1610 will be presented as a liturgy; incense, processions, candles, musicians exploring different areas of the Cathedral’s space, voices placed on high and afar – all, as in St Mark’s vast space, emphasising the beauty of the Cathedral’s acoustic - from the opening declamation of the solo tenor to the meditative stillness of the closing bars.
Performing this extraordinarily theatrical music will be the musicians and choir of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, a world renowned ensemble which plays on original instruments to bring out the very best of classical music as it was intended to be heard.
The Cathedral Refectory will be open from 6pm for dining. Please phone 01722 555 172 to book a table.
