Festival Films at the Arts Centre
Salisbury International Arts Festival has a year round programme of cutting edge arthouse, world cinema, documentaries and archive classics. Over the next few months we are proud to bring you a number of exclusive presentations, advance previews and premieres, along with classic films from the archives and seldom seen lost gems. All films are accompanied by optional educational talks or discussion groups.

Thursday 7 January, 7.30pm Birdwatchers Cert 15. 108mins. Portuguese/Guarani with subtitles Set in the lush forests of Brazil, Birdwatchers tells the story of the indigenous Guarani-Kaiowà, who have been displaced from their homeland onto small reservations. Following a tragic event, these deeply spiritual people decide to reclaim their ancestral land, which is now owned by a wealthy white family. As tensions mount between the two cultures, a bond begins to develop between a young shaman and the landowner’s daughter… |

Saturday 23 January, 7.30pm Coco Before Chanel Cert 12a. 105mins. French with subtitles. A perfectly cast Audrey Tautou shines in this biopic of iconic fashion designer Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, who overcame a humble upbringing in an orphanage to become the legendary couturier, a timeless symbol of success, freedom and style. With sumptuous period sets and costumes, this is one of the year’s most elegant films. |

Thursday 4 February, 7.30pm Fish Tank Cert 15. 123mins. Winner of the Jury prize at Cannes, British Director Andrea Arnold’s beautifully observed drama follows a feisty, rebellious teenager who is trapped in her own inner world. When her mother brings home a charismatic new boyfriend, it sets her pulse racing and gives her a new sense of direction. Subtle and unpredictable, Fish Tank finds poetry in the bleakest of situations and is anchored by a mesmerizing performance from newcomer Katie Jarvis. |

Saturday 13 February, 7.30pm Broken Embraces Cert 15. 128mins. Spanish with subtitles Following the international success of Volver, Pedro Almodovar teams up with Penelope Cruz once again for this sensuous, lavishly produced melodrama. Effortlessly moving backwards and forwards in time it focuses on a blind film director as he reminisces about his turbulent love affair with a young actress. Full of stylistic flourishes and off centre humour, it’s a touching tribute to the restorative powers of cinema. |

Thursday 11 March, 7.30pm 35 Shots of Rum Cert 12a. 100mins French with subtitles An intimate drama about the close connection between a Parisian widower and his teenage daughter and the changes they face as their worlds inevitably shift around them. Beautifully acted and directed, it’s a warm and tender study from one of French cinema’s most distinctive and humanistic storytellers. |

Thursday 1 April, 7.30pm Goodbye Solo Cert 15. 91mins Solo is a kindhearted Senegalese taxi driver who is hired by a despondent old Southerner to drive to him to a mountain top, where, it transpires, he plans to jump to his death. But Solo has other ideas, and over the course of the next two weeks, the two men forge an improbable friendship that will change both of their lives forever. Flawlessly acted, this life affirming drama will have you thinking about their story long after the film ends. |
