Salisbury Food & Drink Festival 2009 - A Great Day Out!

On Sunday 20th September 2009 over 7500 people shopped, were entertained and ate their fill in Salisbury’s historic Market Place from 10am to 5pm.

Over 70 stall holders from around the region - representing the best delis, retailers and producers, as well as a huge selection of restaurants and craft makers – presented their wares to an enthusiastic crowd.

Feedback from stallholders said that their sales were up on last year and this bucks the national trend of food markets being up to 25% down.

This day is estimated to have an economic impact on the city of almost £300,000 -local business man; Mike Davies from Coffeemocha said ‘that the Festival added at least £15,000 to takings on the day of businesses in the square’.

The every popular Waiter’s Race goes from strength to strength – this year attracting teams from 8 local restaurants. The first prize went to The Old Mill Restaurant, in what turned out to be a thrilling finale with the title defenders, ASK, being pipped on the final straight.

Pete Moss, who IS Bread and Butter Theatre kept the whole Market Place entertained with his juggling leeks, ‘magically’ disappearing biscuits and Gardener’s Question Time sessions!

People spent on average about 4 hours in the square. The weather was glorious all day and the crowds sat in the sun sampling flavours from across the world (all with low food miles!) and enjoying one of the many regional beverages from the beer and wine tent run by Abbey Stores.

The free Children and Young People’s workshops are a loved part of the day and Kitchen Academy, Handa’s Surprise, Plastic Fantastic and glass artist Sif Wolthers were kept busy with a constant stream of families making and creating beautiful and delicious things.

Entertainment also included a Chase The Chicken treasure hunt and the ever popular Jeff the Chef cookery demonstrations.

The Food and Drink Festival is held with the support of Salisbury City Council and delivered by the expert team at Salisbury International Arts Festival.

This charming ensemble comedy is based on the true story of a Parisian wine shop owner (a deliciously snobby Alan Rickman) who, confident that his French wines will triumph over the American upstarts, organises a blind wine tasting. The results were not as expected and changed the wine industry for ever. 'This is film is running to coincide with the Salisbury Food and Drink Festival. Tastings of French and Californian wine will be available in the bar from 7pm. See if you can tell the difference! Wine Tasting Tickets: £1.50
