Salisbury International Art Festival

Nature of Art In Wessex

Laverstock Watermeadow River Bourne

Nature of Art is a project managed by Salisbury International Arts Festival. Funding until 2012 has been awarded by Natural England for the project, which will work with communities in Laverstock, Salisbury and in Southampton, Isle Of Wight, Portsmouth, Bournemouth and the M4 Corridor in North Wiltshire.

Nature of Art aims to address a growing need in Wessex for rural and urban communities to have good access to natural greenspace. The project will particularly be focussed on improving access of green spaces through art for the young, the elderly and people with a physical or mental impairment.

Project activities could include the installation of art which provides physical access such as bench sculptures, and performance art which bridges psychological barriers such as a play in a wood or a procession of natural model boats raced down a stream. These activities will be linked by annual showcase events during Salisbury International Arts Festival each May/June.

Key targets for the project include:

  • A community arts event Laverstock, Salisbury in December 2009/January 2010
  • Showcase events in May/June 2010, 2011 and 2012 in the communities taking part – during Salisbury International Arts Festival.
  • A Project Showcase linking all the involved communities, in Salisbury during the 2012 Festival
