Salisbury International Art Festival

Singer Songwriter project

Adam West Banzukes Nesta Studio small
Youth Music powerburst Our Singer Songwriter project took place from February to June 2010 and aimed to develop the skills and creativity of young musicians in Wiltshire.

We worked with young people from across Wiltshire, as well as some from Hampshire and Dorset through a programme of free opportunities including:

  • Week-long intensive courses
  • Weekend rehearsal sessions
  • Vocal coaching sessions
  • A Q&A session with local band City Stereo on first steps in the music business
  • A masterclass on songwriting with Chris Wood of Imagined Village
  • A performance at Salisbury’s City Hall2 as part of the Festival’s Salisbury Live weekend
  • Recording sessions at a professional studio

Many of the young people we worked with live in rural locations, so the project gave them opportunities to progress and learn in ways they might not otherwise be able to access. They were supported by a team of music leaders, student mentors from Wiltshire College Salisbury, volunteers from Bass Connection, Salisbury and the Shak, Pewsey.

Our young musicians took particular inspiration from the 2010 Festival themes of earth and stone and from Earth, a poem by Vikram Seth, who gave us special permission to use the poem for the project

We’ll be releasing some of the resulting tracks later this year. Check back here for online links when they become available.
