Salisbury International Art Festival

Young Critics and Programmers

Our Young Critics scheme has been developed in partnership with local schools and The Unit, Salisbury’s information point run by and for young people. With support from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation in 2010 and 2011, we gave each young critic with pairs of tickets for three Festival events, connecting more people to new experiences through the arts:

Following on from a pilot in 2010, this year a team of 18 young critics have had their eyes on the Festival. They’ve received mentoring from our staff and journalistic advice from Anne Morris, arts correspondent at the Salisbury Journal, where some of their reviews have featured. Scroll down to find out what has inspired, surprised, moved and amused them in the 2011 and 2010 Festivals. We will continue to maintain links with our young critics and other young people who’ve been involved in recent Festival projects, through a young programmers’ group who will work with us on the mix for the 2012 Festival and beyond, putting young people at the heart of what we do.

“This was the first time I had ever watched a Shakespeare production, I really enjoyed it. I would recommend it to anyone, it was so brilliant.” Mark, 2011

“This has given me a new view of circus; I will never think of it the same again.”  Jack, 2011

We were told that it was going to be a ‘different’ experience, and that it was a ‘meditation’ rather than a concert. After thinking about it, I realised that it has a deeper, more profound meaning than most other music.” Zara, 2011

My mother-in-law thought she would never have the opportunity to see a ballet, so she was highly delighted to be invited by her granddaughter.  She thoroughly enjoyed it and now wishes to see a full ballet production. It would be lovely to see other people being able to have the same sort of opportunity.  A great introduction to the arts.” Parent, 2011
