SUPPORT OUR PARAS
A GREAT DAY OUT – SUPPORTING REALLY WORTHY CAUSES
On Sunday 25th May Old Sarum airfield near Salisbury will play host to an all-day event that will provide wonderful family entertainment and raise urgently needed money to support two very deserving causes. They are the families of those members of the Parachute Regiment who are casualties of current operations, and Hope & Homes for Children, the Salisbury based charity dedicated to providing a family and future for young victims of war and disaster.
An action packed day will include breathtaking freefall parachuting displays by the renowned Red Devils, the official parachute display team of the Parachute Regiment and the British Army. The Yak 50s of the Aerostars will put on a spectacular aerobatics display, while WWII buffs will be stirred by the unmistakable Merlin engine sound of Spitfire, Hurricane and Mustang fighters.
Attractions on the ground will include a display of no less than 55 aircraft, some of them vintage, as well as military equipment, including a Challenger main battle tank, Scimitar light tank, Trojan Bridge Builder and a light gun. The more energetic will be able to tackle an assault course and a rock climbing wall, or try their skills in the paint ball arena and rifle range. On a gentler note, for lovers of Britain’s prestigious car marques there will be parades by the Bentley Drivers Owners Club and the Aston Martin Owners Club.
The day will provide a poignant reminder of the courage – and, on occasion, the sacrifice – that is the hallmark of The Parachute Regiment and comes after the news that the Regiment will be substantially deployed in Afghanistan. Visitors will be able to participate in a drumhead service and see a march past by Parachute Regiment veterans. A plaque will be unveiled in memory of fallen Paras and the day will end with a Sunset ceremony and Beating Retreat.
The event has the enthusiastic backing of Gen Sir John Reith, Colonel Commandant the Parachute Regiment and Gen Sir Mike Jackson, former Chief of the General Staff, who is Patron of “SUPPORT OUR PARAS”.
