Sculpture project at Solstice Park

Red Kite – White Horse – River Avon – Mallow – Dragonfly

A series of award-winning sculptures, created by sculptor Charlotte Moreton and 74 apprentices from the QinetiQ Apprentice Training School at Boscombe Down for Salisbury International Arts Festival.These sculptures are a lasting arts legacy for the local community and for visitors to Wiltshire.

Through a partnership between Salisbury International Arts Festival, Solstice Park and QinetiQ, Boscombe Down, five groups of QinetiQ apprentices have worked with Charlotte Moreton to create a landmark sculpture inspired by aspects of the natural landscapes and heritage of Wiltshire.

Since it began in 2007 the project has:

• developed an innovative partnership which demonstrates what the arts, business and local communities can achieve together
• won awards including the first Arts & Business South West Awards as Champion of the Year; categories in the Chelsea Building Society Arts & Business South West Community Award; and the Trimedia Harrison Cowley Arts & Business South West Employees Award.
• involved 74 engineering and avionics apprentices from QinetiQ in designing, testing and building the sculptures, in line with project development procedures used by QinetiQ engineers
• increased apprentices’ skills in communication, leadership, project planning, creative problem-solving and team-working
• enabled apprentices to see a project through from the drawing board to final execution – probably a unique opportunity in their careers in the aviation industry
• enabled an artist to push boundaries and help people to learn vital new skills
• involved students from secondary and primary schools in Amesbury, Pewsey and Salisbury
