The Red Kite (2011)

Inspired by themes of air and flight, this sculpture aims to convey the predatory power, speed, agility and characteristic forked tail that makes the red kite such an iconic bird. It was built using welded and powder-coated steel tubing and perforated steel plates.

We ran a number of linked projects in local schools. Stonehenge School’s Design Technology department worked with Charlotte Moreton to make several smaller birds from acrylic, while children from Amesbury Archer Primary School, Sarum Academy and Woodlands Primary School in Salisbury took part in workshops on making and flying kites.

The sculpture was seen by thousands of people at the opening event of the 2011 Salisbury International Arts Festival and was officially unveiled at Solstice Park on 4th October 2011 by the Mayors of Amesbury and Salisbury.
