The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Friday 4 July
Julian Schnabel. 2007. 112 mins. Cert 12A
The remarkable true story of Jean-Dominique Bauby, the charismatic editor of French Elle, who at the age of 43 suffered a stroked which paralysed him. Communicating using just one eye, he painstakingly blinks out his best-selling memoir, eloquently describing his interior world including the torment of being trapped inside his body.
Using a dreamlike collage of flashbacks, distorted images, painterly cinematography and often very humorous interior voiceover, it's a compelling and life affirming cinematic experience.
'Dazzlingly inventive...a gorgeously atmospheric and deeply affecting piece of work.' The Times
A post-show discussion with film programmer Patrick Bliss will follow the screening.
