The Festival worked with Artist Dave Chadwick, pyrotechnic artists and the communities of Wiltshire to deliver an inspiring land art project that delivered a series of performances to illuminate two of Wiltshire’s historic white horses.
To create the lanterns to light up the white horses free workshops were held in town centre venues, predominantly for family groups. Further lanterns were made by children from local primary schools, a care home for young adults, Devizes Guides, Wiltshire Young Carers and Age Concern.
White Horses illumination events in new locations for the Festival: Devizes, Alton Barnes and all along the 90 miles of Wiltshire’s White Horse Trail
The White Horses project engaged with over 1,300 people in Devizes and Alton Barnes through the workshops, participatory events and a week-long programme of artist-led walks.
The Festival also commissioned the poet Carol Ann Duffy to write a poem based on the white horses, which was used as inspiration and lyrics for a song written as part of a project with Wiltshire College students.
The music written by Wiltshire College students included:
‘Trip Clop’ by Joe Rideout and the band. Vocals: Sadie Lee. Lyrics based on The White Horses by Carol Ann Duffy
Jack’s ‘White Horse’ song with original lyrics
Irene Chan’s ‘White Horse’ instrumental piece
